UNDER THE TENT Envisioning Neighbourhoods - Regent Park Revitalization Committee: Regent Park – Toronto

In 1995, the community based Regent Park Northeast Redevelopment Working Committee, in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing took the lead in advocating for redevelopment focusing on 163 rent geared to income social housing units.

Working with the Metro Toronto Housing Authority they saw the need for redeveloping the whole of Regent Park in a phase-by-phase approach. The Committee became a sub-committee of the Regent Park Residents Council, calling itself the Revitalization Committee to encompass the physical and social changes that the redevelopment was to bring.

In 2002, the Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) worked on the Regent Park planning process with extensive community consultation, which resulted in a shared vision. The vision set out 12 guiding principles that form the foundation for the revitalization of the neighbourhood.

Based on these guidelines, residents, TCHC and city staff developed a Social Development Plan with 75 recommendations. The plan gave residents tools and opportunities to foster social cohesion and inclusion.

In 2005 the Daniels Corporation was selected as the developer partner to build Phase I and II. Jointly TCHC, The Daniel’s Corporation and Regent Park are working towards building a healthy and vibrant neighbourhood.
